This policy explains how Robotical Ltd uses information in the Robotical app on the web and on phones, including MartyBlocks, MartyBlocks Jr and the Warranty Service. It does not cover purchases on the separate Robotical shop website, which has its own website privacy policy.
Most activities can be used without registering. Warranty registration, sending feedback and saving a project to the cloud involve sending information to us. App usage analytics are optional; the Warranty Service has separate settings.
Who we are
Robotical Ltd is registered in Scotland under company number SC524016. Our registered office is Suite C1, First Floor, Stanhope House, 12 Stanhope Place, Edinburgh, EH12 5HH, United Kingdom. You can contact us about privacy at dpo@robotical.io.
Information we use
Using the app and connecting a robot
The app uses browser or phone storage for settings, your analytics choice, locally saved projects and information needed to connect to a robot. Connecting to Marty or Cog can involve Bluetooth or the local network. If you configure a robot's Wi-Fi connection, the app sends the network name and password to that robot. The phone app uses device storage and can ask for Bluetooth, local network, camera or microphone access when a feature needs it. You can control those permissions in your device settings. Locally saved work stays on your device unless you choose an online feature or send it to us.
When you load the web app or use an online feature, our hosting and service providers receive technical request information such as an IP address and browser or device details. We use this to deliver and protect the service. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a reliable and secure app.
Optional cloud project saves
If you choose cloud save in MartyBlocks, the project content and a generated project code are stored online so the project can be loaded or shared. A project can contain information you put into it, including names, images or sounds. Anyone you give the code or link to may be able to load the project. Please avoid putting student personal information in projects you intend to share. We use this information to provide the feature you requested; our legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing the app's optional features.
Feedback and support
If you send feedback or an issue report, we receive what you submit: a message, rating, optional email address and any screenshots you choose to attach. The report also includes technical context such as the app version, device or browser information and, where a robot is connected, its details. Screenshots and messages may contain information visible on your screen. We use reports to respond and improve the app, based on our legitimate interest in supporting users and fixing problems.
Error diagnostics
Where error monitoring is enabled, technical error reports may include a stack trace, app version, page, device type and connection state. These reports help us find faults and keep the app working. They are separate from the optional usage analytics choice. We use them for our legitimate interest in maintaining and securing the app.
Warranty Service
To register a robot, we ask for an email address, school or establishment name and robot serial number. We use those details to register the robot, send a registration email, show warranty information and provide support. Warranty records can include robot usage statistics. If you report a problem, we may also record the robot name or type, fault description, software and hardware versions, and related correspondence. A registered robot can send fault information to our Warranty Service when the app detects a recurring hardware problem. Registration currently enables service analytics and automated fault reporting; the Warranty Dashboard provides separate controls for these settings.
We process warranty information to provide and administer the service and respond to claims. Depending on the relationship with you or your school, our legal basis is performance of a contract or our legitimate interest in honouring warranties and providing support. We may also keep records where required by law. Warranty registration is optional, but we need the registration details to provide registered Warranty Service features.
The Warranty Service does not require student names or grades. Please use a staff or school contact address for registration where possible.
Usage analytics
With your permission, we collect app usage information to understand which screens and activities are used and how long sessions last. It can include an app session ID, device ID, robot ID or type, app version, operating system and browser details. Because identifiers can be linked to a device or robot, we do not describe this information as anonymous. We do not need usage analytics to provide the basic app.
Our legal basis for optional usage analytics is consent. You can accept or decline when prompted and change your choice later using Help → Data Analytics. Withdrawing consent stops future optional usage tracking; it does not undo data already processed. The app stores your choice on your device. On iOS, the phone app may also ask for the system tracking permission; you can change that in iOS Settings.
How long information is kept
- Local projects and preferences remain on your browser or device until you delete them, clear its storage or remove the app, subject to your device's storage behaviour.
- Cloud projects remain available while the save is needed for the sharing feature. Contact us with the project code if you want a cloud save removed.
- Warranty registration and support records are kept while needed to provide the warranty, handle claims and meet applicable record-keeping obligations.
- Feedback, optional usage analytics and technical diagnostics are kept while needed to respond to reports, understand use, investigate faults and protect the service. We then delete or aggregate information that is no longer needed.
To ask about a particular record or request deletion, contact us using the details below. Some records may need to be kept for legal or claims purposes.
Your choices and rights
You can use the app without agreeing to optional usage analytics. You can manage locally saved information through the app or your browser or phone settings, and you can choose whether to send feedback or make a cloud save.
Depending on your circumstances and the legal basis, you can ask to access, correct, delete or restrict the use of your personal information, or ask for a copy in a portable form. You can withdraw analytics consent at any time. Contact us to make a request; we may need to verify your identity or your authority to act for a school or child.
You can object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Contact us at dpo@robotical.io to do so.
If you have a concern about how we handle personal information, please contact us first. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
